Thanksgiving in Arkansas and at Home

I accidentally posted this out of order. Before it was getting to look a lot like Christmas, we had a nice time in Arkansas for Thanksgiving...

My sister and I took our kids and our Dad on a hike at Woolly Hollow State Park. We walked the Huckleberry Trail around the lake.

Scenes from our day:

Gratitude List From the Week:
Since I have stretched out my Gratitude List over the course of years, I'm sure I will end up repeating things occasionally. That's ok. They are different feelings and different reasons during different points in life. A beautiful day for a hike (#533), Woolly Holly State Park (#534), my Dad's improving health (#535), after 7 years, my soft, squishy (as more than one of them have described me), warm body is still the biggest comfort to my son (#536), that every time I express that I wish I could have another baby, THIS ONE declares, "Momma, you still have a baby!!!" (#537)

He's talking about himself, of course. I read some people's opinions recently about how Momma's boys grow up to be narcissistic and terrible partners. :0 It did cause me to pause and worry for a minute haha. My boys aren't given everything they want, though; they are told no, I give it to them straight when I need to, they're pretty sweet boys...so I will just keep trying my best to love them like crazy without them turning into terrible romantic partners one day lol.

Little girls who are quickly turning into big girls...but who can still giggle and make up dance routines that they perform for the family. (#538)

Cousin movie nights (#539)...and my sister is really funny #540 (memory: Dash telling her about how people watch youtube channels that consist of watching others play video games - and Cary pretending to start a youtube channel about people watching her do her crossword puzzles)

My niece is amazing, and I adore her. (#541)

My nephew is amazing, and I adore him. (#542)

The best drives from Arkansas to Florida (#543) include a stop at one of the Cafe Sunflower locations in Atlanta:
drumstix for the kids

one of the best desserts they have (#544)

We had spaghetti for Thanksgiving at my parents' house. The kids and I, feeling very nostalgic about our holiday traditions, were a little like "Whaaaattt?!" (However, we love spaghetti, and it was delicious. #545) And we also felt badly that Dad had to be at home, working (#546), and Thanksgiving food is one of his favorites. SO, when we returned from our trip, we made a Thanksgiving meal complete with Tofurky...(#547)

and pumpkin pie. (#548)

Thankful for the 10 hands that belong to my children and husband.(#549-558)

First Month of School

 Homeschool Academy
To invent, you need a good imagination and a pile of junk.
- Thomas Edison
The 3 youngest kids all take a class called Junk Box Wars at different times with their own age levels.

This class is based on the tv show Junkyard Wars. The kids have individual or group challenges each class. Just a few of their other challenges include throwing a candy cane without it breaking, building tall card houses, making sling shots, creating marble runs, and building "pilgrim houses" that can withstand wind and weight, etc. It's a good interactive/teamwork/social class.

This particular day (this pic and ones above) their assigment was to build a contraption that would cushion an egg's fall to keep it intact. There were different rounds/testing variables.

House Update
Although we did like the sunny feel of the breakfast nook with the yellow walls, I couldn't quite get on board with this particular shade of yellow with everything we own. I had to go with my standard gray, much to my sunshine-y daughter's chagrin. I don't think it's as dark as it seems in this pic. I was also happy to hang up all of my (around 30) cute plates. Since we lived in the RV for the year, it's kind of fun to unpack things that you had almost forgotten about.

Friend Fun
Sis got a day out with a friend at a trampoline/climbing place in Tampa.

Homeschool
This is the chapter book we are reading together right now. We started reading it several months ago but misplaced it. Now we are back at it. We visited the actual Alamo last year. Aaaaand getting ready for another visit. I recommend this book for a greater understanding of what happened here. There weren't many options for Alamo themed children's books. We all remained engaged in this historical fiction book.

I mentioned in last post that we do our history lessons together. At the end of each lesson, we try to play an online game, Kahoot! This requires me to create questions ahead of time using information from the chapter, as well as pulling questions for review. This is a fun motivation for all of them. We are keeping track of points. I told them the overall winner at the end of the year will receive a special prize.
I just noticed that Dash had named himself Mr. Hair Cake during this particular day. (What a fun personality this kid has!) I feel I need to explain this is from a youtube video he showed us one day. I can't even begin to properly explain this video. It's basically these guys who make a cake using all sorts of hair - like shaved off their bodies, etc. They proceed to eat the cake. I literally threw up watching this video. I'm not kidding. (And I don't know why I'm sharing this for anyone in the world to see.) We were sitting on the bed watching it, I started feeling nauseous, I THREW UP and had to run to the bathroom with my hands over my mouth. I'm sure the kids wish they had a video of my reaction to that video.

Travel
Labor Day Weekend arrived, and we made plans with relatives in Missouri and Texas. We only made a quick one night stop through my home state, and while we were there I took them to a well-loved restaurant (where we can pretty much eat nothing, but they were excited to order drinks, which is a treat for our water-at-restaurants family) at Flat Creek. Two of my childhood friends play in a cover band, and I always enjoy going to their shows. My kids had expressed they wanted to go watch them sometime since they know it's something I do occasionally. They got to meet some of my friends and like I wrote in a previous post, they got to experience a little bit of my small town roots, which is good for my "city kids."

THESE TWO...are always either picking on each other or having great fun. They're like an old married couple. 23 months apart in age. I'm curious what their relationship will be like when they get older.

We went to my aunt's house for our annual kickball game with my uncle, cousin (who is my age) and his kids, which was the main purpose for this leg of the trip.

I love kickball. And we always have a great time getting together with this crew. I try really hard to keep traditions and connections within our nomadic, somewhat untraditional life.

Next stop on our Labor Day Weekend Extravaganza was a visit to see my college roommate who lives near Dallas. I hadn't seen her in YEARS, probably since the older boys were very little. We had dinner out with her husband and two young sons and spent the night with them. (Ninja always says he is "so shy," but really he is my friendliest, least shy kid.)

Jen and I lived together for two years in college. She is one of the NICEST, funniest, easiest people I have ever known. I have missed her, for sure; it was so nice to hang out with her and for my kids to see how great she is. They really liked her!

Another long overdue visit was to our best friends from our early days in Arkansas. The four of us met pre-kids, so we have known them for 20 years. Our kids always attended each others' birthday parties, etc. "growing up." We moved to Florida, and they moved to Texas and somehow five years went by without us seeing each other. I had decided earlier this year that I was not going to let 2018 end without getting together with our long lost pals.
I was curious how the kids would interact. Ninja didn't even remember them because he was still a baby when we left Arkansas. They all sat in formal awkwardness for the first half hour. By the end of the visit, they were running around playing like no time had passed at all.

Life is so busy. Life is so hard. I MUST do better about seeing the people who mean the most to us. If only time and money were infinite resources. Spending time with Jen and these kids I had held as babies (and their very cool parents) was good for my soul.

Thousand Oaks: A New Era, part 2 summer

June continued on, and there was still a lot of this kind of stuff going on: unpacking boxes and sanding/restaining furniture. (This particular table - a large bamboo one from Crate and Barrel has been our dining room table for around 11 years.)

We were sad that the top received a little wear/warping from the storage unit hurricane debaucle.

Ryan worked on it, though, and now honestly I like it more than ever. (I feel like this pic doesn't do it justice, and I can't show the entire table because it's so messy right now.)

We had plenty of time to sneak away for fun, though. These two joined me in a drive to Orlando to watch my beautiful niece play volleyball one afternoon.

Tornado, Sis, and I went to watch Won't You Be My Neighbor? First of all, I love the Tampa Theater so much. It's one of my favorite things about living in Tampa. And the movie: I LOVED IT. I walked away wanting to be a better person, believing more in the goodness of mankind. I always assumed Mr. Rogers was a good, sweet man who seemed to have a pretty successful show, and I never thought about him much past that. He was a beautiful human who put forth so much love into the world. If you never saw it, please watch it.

One day we went to watch How To Train Your Dragon 2 at a dollar summer movie showing with my friends and their kids.

Our kittens were still thriving and growing and being the little loves of our lives.

Little Man got a hair cut!

I took off on a little road trip by myself one day. I rented a cute, tiny moving van to retrieve some pieces of furniture from my mom and dad's house. I always enjoy using a weekend getaway to recharge my mother batteries. I'm not someone who needs a lot of time away from my kids during normal weeks (Hello, Attachment Parenting). I don't watch a lot of tv, I don't have any vices other than chocolate, I don't hang out with people a lot in Florida. But please give me a couple of nights every few months to sleep alone and think solid thoughts in my head that aren't interrupted every two minutes.

I got to visit a little bit with my parents, sister, niece, nephew, other sister, and a couple of friends while I was in Arkansas. I also stopped by Memphis to find a good meal and walked around Beale Street for an hour or so, which I don't think (?)  I've done since college. And I returned home with my big, old dollhouse my dad made us when I was in college, a dresser, the hope chest my great granny left me in her will (as her first great granddaughter), and my Jenny Lind bed I grew up with.

While I was gone, these cuties worked on pulling weeds from our pretty landscaping.

This was the "summer of slime." It was constant. It turned into the "year of slime." Which has only increased in its intensity.

Other things were made, too. Like this "potion." I'm not certain what is in it other than green food dye and dog food.

And this vegan strawberry cheesecake and vegan puppy chow which WERE edible and delicious.

Speaking of vegan food, a new place opened in Tampa called Quality Foods. You can get a lot of vegan products here such as meat, cheese, and desserts. You can also order from a menu, which we did one day when we needed a quick lunch and picked up this cheese/meat/olive/bread plate with fresh mustard.

And a big summer trip...
4th of July trip to my mom and dad's house

My kids' favorite times of their lives include hanging out with grandparents and cousins.

If you ask them if they wanted to go on a luxury vacation or go see their relatives, they would either be greatly torn or choose seeing their family.

my babies!

The girls tried out Sister's bubble gum making science kit.

There was lots of lego building and board game playing.

Tornado is now officially the tallest member of my entire family!

My dad might be Ninja's favorite person.
He has always been that way.
